If you’re not already aware of psychiatry’s background, then this film will be shocking. Even if you are, the film is still very disturbing. It gives a frightening perspective of the field of psychiatry! A description of this almost 2-hour documentary by CCHR is below, followed by the actual full-length film.
“From instilling fear in asylum inmates with brutal treatments, to the modern application of restraint, senseless drugging and electroshock, psychiatrists have a long and hidden history of force, intimidation and outright terror.
This is where Germany enters the picture, for it was here that psychiatry was born, here where psychiatry was nurtured and grew, and here where psychiatry would commit one of the world’s most horrific atrocities.
Filmed in Germany and Austria, The Age of Fear contains shocking personal testimony and revealing inside footage that tell the true story of psychiatry, whose reliance on brutality and coercion has not changed since the moment it was born.”
(A shorter 11-min. clip can be found on the CCHR website. By the way, CCHR is an organization closely tied to Scientology; and Scientology has had a decades-long war against psychiatric abuse. This blogger is not — and never has been — affiliated with CCHR or Scientology in any way.)
It’s interesting how many psychiatrists have a reputation for talking with their patients for maybe 10 minutes in order to label them with a psych disorder, prescribe (addictive) medications…. before dismissing them until their next appointment. Additionally, it’s very interesting to note how popular ECT (electroconvulsive / electroshock therapy) is today through psychiatry, especially for the elderly.
However, it should also be noted that this posting does NOT imply that all psychiatrists are “in bed” with Big Pharma, insensitive to humanity or overtly abusive. Quite the contrary! You can find psychiatrists who have high ethical standards to “do no harm.” Some even find healthy ways to improve patients’ lives, if not actually “cure” them — outside of medication. Unfortunately, these same psychiatrists are in the clear minority and are usually NOT embraced by their fellow professionals or by the all-powerful pharmaceutical industry.
